Mobile UI - 2007
At frog design's New York Studio, I was responsible for visual UI in the development of a new design language system for new handsets scheduled to enter the US market in late 2007.
The visual layer of the UI was flexible enough to adapt to different handset specs with minor effort, and reflected changes to Virgin Mobile USA's brand.

Tiers
To avoid a one-size fits all
approach (which would mean compromises at the high and low ends), three tiers of handsets were
considered: low-end, mid-tier and high-end.

Limitations
Considering handset limitations in the low end of the product catalog was critical. Framerates were low
and color reproduction not fully consistent across different manufacturers.

Icon Studies
A lot of attention was given to subtle details in the Grid Main Menu, including metaphor
and expression for unfocused states, focus states, and the transition between them. With a maturing
brand, Virgin Mobile needed to move away from their traditional overt quirkiness without losing
character.
